DMORT works closely with the National Transportation and
Safety Board and each
organization maintains a Interagency Agreement for disaster
assistance.
Since the Aviation
Disaster Family Assistance Act of 1996 (and its subsequent
legislation) the NTSB has federally mandated requirements for
managing support to family members legal next -of-kin to disaster
victims. Since 1996 the NTSB has fulfilled its role of
coordinating resources of state and local authorities, the federal
government, and the transportation industry with the NTSB Office of
Family Affairs. In July 2002, the NTSB created the Office of
Transportation Disaster Assistance to reflect the broad range of
office duties.
Currently, the Office of Transportation Disaster Assistance
coordinates public and private responsibilities in the wake of
transportation disasters for all modes of transportation covered by
the NTSB. The NTSB Transportation Disaster Assistance Team stands
ready to assist families of victims, communities, governmental
agencies, and the transportation industry with support in the form
of Family Assistance Centers, forensic services, and inter-agency
coordination to manage and recover from transportation disasters.
The NTSB Office of
Transportation Disaster Assistance publishes a listing of resources
for mass disaster responders. Those documents can be found
here.
